Waulking Rhythm Drawings

2024
Groot Begijnhof, Gent

Waulking refers to a traditional way of carefully felting tweed after weaving the fabric. The rhythmic action, often done in group and accompanied with rhythmic singing, resonates in the drawings. The rhythm is essentially made independent, as the cadence of a repetitive and disciplined drawing process that takes up time and that seems almost meditative. At the same time, drawing itself is also questioned, a pattern is created that, through meticulous repetition, interweaves the manual with the mechanical, at times even with the manic. The hand becomes an instrument that moves skilfully and systematically.
